Kid Cudi is back and has his new rock sensibilities in tow for his contribution to The Hunger Games’ soundtrack, “The Ruler & The Killer.” If you thought this was going to be Mescudi’s return to the rap realm, your feelings will be hurt. Considering the inspiration from which he draws though, the song makes perfect sense and a perfect fit.
The tribal, drum-driven track features wisps of guitar on the verses, but dark layered riffs on the hook. It’s anxious and evocative enough to put a frown on your face and foreshadows something really bad. You will have to watch the movie to find out what that is though.
Cudi half speaks, half sings his lyrics about a person who has usurped control through murder. This character has a plan and expects nothing but complete deference from his minions. It’s some serious stuff. I wish there was more commitment in Cudi’s delivery when he picks up songs like this. As per his usual, he sounds like he’s half-assing. More emotion from him would do wonders for his new style.
“The Ruler & The Killer” baby. Check it out.
