The Planet, along with Chicago’s own Square One of B-Side Radio, have joined forces to bring you the week in review in Hip-Hop and current events, along with the occasional special guest and some music to keep you moving through your day.
This week’s IllSide Radio features a look at the recent ESPN movie The Announcement, which dealt with that fateful November 7th, 1991, when Earvin “Magic” Johnson, arguably the greatest point guard basketball has ever seen, announced to the world that he had contracted the HIV virus. The film, narrated by Magic, chronicles the event and its aftermath. It was a seminal moment in Black History, sports history, and sexual politics. The crew talk about the movie and the events it covers.
As is customary around this time of the year, we play the What If game with the Notorious B.I.G. We talk about whether Jay-Z would have risen had Mr. Wallace lived and the answer may surprise you. It doesn’t help to have hope, at least it doens’t pay to lie about creating Hope posters by jacking the Associated Press pictures. It seems that after a few rounds of lying and internet wrangling, the hope guy’s (Shepherd Fairly) time ran out and he ends up in the big house for paving Obama’s way to the White House. Maybe he’ll have a Ja Rulian “amazing” time in the penal.
All this and more in this edition of IllSide Radio. So sit back, relax and take a ride on the Ill Side.
