If you thought the Bobby Womack/Damon Albarn collaborations were going to stop with “Stylo” From Plastic Beach and “Bobby in Phoenix” from The Fall, you were mistaken. XL Records has scooped up Womack and will be releasing his upcoming album The Bravest Man in the Universe sooner than anyone expected. And with sooner than expected I mean anytime in the next thousand years. I thought Mr. Womack was one for the history books, but I’m not going to complain.
Womack’s lead single from the upcoming project, “Please Forgive My Heart,” drips with the raspy, emotional soul singing few new school crooners can muster, but the misty electro track fails him. It’s the kind of sound you plaster an equally machine fortified voice on. Womack overwhelms Damon Albarn’s foundation and he does it without even trying.
“Please Forgive My Heart,” but I would prefer to hear some real instruments under this. The acoustic guitar at the end was just not enough of a consolation. That’s just my opinion though. Tell us what you think.
