I remember the first time I saw Vado. Cam had just come out of the wilderness after all that 50 Cent madness and he did a show at Highline Ballroom. This kid got some mic time and he was aight, but it wasn’t anything special. I could barely make out his name. Vado or something close to it. Still very ordinary.
Fast forward a couple years ad a couple of shared mixtapes with Cam and Vado had improved drastically. No longer did you get the feel that this kid was one of the off the block homies that Cam was trying to save from jail. He looked and felt legitimate as a rapper. He bodied a couple guest appearances as well to the point where you could actually see him holding down a project of is own.
But then you get to thinking. Is the rapper that ends up on the mainstream going to resemble the rapper that you rooted for on the come up? Well if this new video by Vado, featuring Fabolous riding shot gun is any indication, there may be a bit more flash but the end product won’t be unrecognizable. Two Vado verse sandwich an decidedly ill Fabolous guest spot, the first being very “flashy” and lacking that underdog grit that had endeared me to Vado. A lot of slick talk and a lot of balling talk made the verse underwhelming, especially when F-A-B-O came behind him and bodied is contribution. At one point I actually Tweeted Vado and said the song was subpar on his end. Thankfully the kid redeemed himself with a strong finish.
I’ll leave it up to you guys to decide whether the track passes muster, but I will say that there are growing pains for every rapper as they try to find a salable yet credible persona. Hopefully Vado will find the right balance between the high life and the street life. On “Okay Ya’ll” the verdict is still out on my end. Enjoy.
