Stalking the streets of Hip-Hop is the unheralded DMV area. We’ve had flashes from Timbo, Missy and Pharell. We’ve had the Clipse and Wale, but the hoods of DC, Maryland and Virginia haven’t really been given their Hip-Hop movement pass. The Diamond District has been pushing dope music for some time now, and front man Oddisee is building quite the resume as both emcee and producer. He’s behind the boards and running the middle leg of this track “Mr. IDGAF” with host rapper Sm City and freestyle phenom Phil Ade on the anchor.Big brass the opening for gravity’s sake with cymbal clashes. Piano work opens the lead verse and makes way for the drums. Oddisee employs different keyboard arrangements and drum patterns to keep the track alive, avoiding the monotony of traditional loop-based sample-driven Hip-Hop.
All three rappers get it done in their own way, each talking about trying to carry their movements in the face of detractors. Nobody appreciates their grind and when they finallly look like they are going to make it, they get a rush of whyuaintputmeonitis from the peanut gallery.
Looks like there’s some spillover from an extra hot 2011. Another golden era perhaps? Whatever the case, one thing they do give a fuck about is the music. “Mr. IDGAF.” Enjoy.
