Sleigh Bells Add Some Pop To The Snap And Crackle On Comeback Kid

By shelz.

When “Born to Lose” appeared a couple of weeks ago, it seemed to confirm that Sleigh Bells would be back to do more damage to your speakers with their sophomore release, Reign Of Terror. Provided were weighty riffs run through an odd side show like processor and a drum machine set on code red. Given, Krauss sounded like she’s taking her singing a little more seriously on this cut, but it was the same grate your woofers to nubs sound we enjoyed on Treats.

“Comeback Kid” is a whole ‘nother story.

Alexis Krauss says the melodies here are pop infused with an R&B tint. What I’m hearing is all those young R&B singers of the early 90’s who began substituting pop for soul.  This led to the total removal of the line of demarcation between the two and plenty of old heads holding on to their En Vogue records because most of what came after them sucked. But I digress.

There are layers upon layers on “Comeback Kid.” It sounds more convoluted than anything from Treats and that edge carried in their debut release has been rounded. Krauss is, again, doing more actual singing than flirting with the idea and the whole feeling is lighter and more pop happy.

This is what the uber-chill Brooklyn duo said they wanted; a pop record. It’s yet to be seen if that’s what their fans wanted though. Take a listen and tell us what you think.
