A few years ago, Chuck Eddy said Regional Mexican music was a genre to keep your eye on. Of course my response was “yeah, maybe if you’re in Mexico.” Since then I’ve developed a real interest in Mexican punk outfit, Le Butcherettes. I guess I have a healthy appetite for crow.
This though, seemed like such a stretch. An LA punk band toggling over to Mariachi. Other than umm… okaaaaaay. What could you really say about it? Nothing, until now.
Now you can say The Bronx aka Mariachi El Bronxhave managed to garner critical respect and a legitimate consumer following with what panned out to be much more than a gimmick. They and their fans take every bit of this seriously.
Its been a few years and yes I am late getting on the bus. But now that they are taking guest spots on Kimmel’s show to perform “Norteno Lights,” they might just need a double-decker. Next time I’ll listen to Chuck Eddy.
