Juvenile’s post Cash Money history has left much to be desired. Recently Drake gave him a big time nod on his album Take Care and he’s been returning slowly but surely to the limelight. On the way, he got a lil help from the Bauce and the legendary Mannie Fresh for his newest joint from the upcoming album Rejuvenation, “Power.”
The track has that signature Mannie bounce to it and is devoid of the snare drums, tubas, double drums patterns and horror movie keys that have almost killed Southern production in recent memory. In it’s place is a higher tempo groove that will work in both whips and strip clubs, if not headphones and stationary listening. It’s a nice change of pace hearing Rick Ross on something faster paced as well, where you can hear some of the other tools in his musical arsenal. The
Juve’s voice is a little lower in pitch and more gravely, but he’s not rusty. He shows immediate love to J Prince, Pimp C and Scarface and talks that rich negro rap shit, full of floss and all that other baller talk. Rick Ross delivers some bars at a higher rate than we’ve been used to hearing from him recently. Absent are the half bar trap raps from songs like “MCc Hammer” and in their place is a smooth comfortable flow that puts Ross’ versatilty as an emcee in clear view. Nothing incredible lyrically, just evidence that Ross is not a one trick pony.
I don’t know that you can call this a comeback but this is a solid song. It’s good to hear Manny Fresh and Juve together again and nice to hear Ross on another kind of beat. It won’t change your life but you won’t change the dial. That’s the “Power” of it. Enjoy.
