We are taking another step closer to one of the most anticipated Hip-Hop releases of the first quarter with Gangrene’s “Vodka & Ayahausca,” the title track from Alchemist and Oh No’s second collaborative full length. And this step is more like a stomp.
Look up Ayahausca if you need to, I did. Just for those who aren’t in the know this is a serious hallucinogenic tea from South America that can allegedly cure a shit load of ills. I suppose if you mix it with vodka it will save you from sobriety. Playing off the properties of the rain forest elixir, Gangrene is taking intoxication to new level, both thematically and sonically with a combination of an anxious bassline and frenetic guitar work. The layering effects and vocals on the hook are a bit busy, but this is exactly the type of sound that would captivate someone dabbling in that exulted high.
Oh No’s lyrics are about getting flucked up. What a surprise.
Anyway, its not for everyone, but if you like your Hip-Hop with a definite 60’s drug culture bent, you will enjoy this. I think the drug raps are just worn at this point, but at least these guys decided to recycle a sound that’s been dormant for a minute. “Vodka & Ayahausca.” Enjoy … in moderation.
