I’m sure of it. This is the oddest thing I’ve ever heard. D’Angelo, king of Brown Sugar, covers Seattle grunge pioneer Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun,” possibly for his upcoming (see: never coming) 3rd LP. Do you see that look on his face? Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
Stranger things have happened (like this), but this is right up there with well… all of them. The thing is though, if D’Angelo didn’t sound incoherent, this would actually work. Given, I didn’t hear anything that remotely reminded me of the original until Mr. Archer got to the chorus, but as we always say with covers, go hard or go home.
He definitely puts his own spin on this, rendering the song a completely different piece of work. This may or may not end up on an album that may or may not (see not) come, but it’s nice to be reminded of what once was.
“Black Hole Sun,” some of the most prized shrapnel from the Seattle explosion, smoothed out on the D’Angelo tip. Enjoy.
Just in case you don’t know the Soundgarden version.
