One thing you can definitely say about this Black Hippy crew is they have a great sense of drama when it comes to their tracks. That could be a detriment to less interesting emcees as you start feeling you would be happier if you were listening to the original. But these guys keep your attention well enough that you look forward to hearing how they will use the selected classic.
At least that’s the case most of the time. “Black Lip Bastard” isn’t a bad song, but it is an exception to that rule. Ab Soul explains his all black everything mantra, taking a couple of tangents into chest beating and girl grabbing territory. He lazily growls over the hook, sounding like that weed he’s rapping about is indeed floating through his lungs. It’s menacing enough, but the hook holds it back, a problem that rears its ugly head a few times on ScHoolboy Q’s latest as well, but we’ll talk about that later today.
Anyway, “A Song For You” is the classic that Ab-Soul just couldn’t tame and it’s some pretty dope songwriting regardless of who performs it. How about a little Ray Charles.
