Luke James: #Luke

By Odeisel

With their Hip-Hop section  sinking in quagmire, DefJam is marshalling their considerable force behind newcomer Luke James. He’s got a solid voice, he’s good-looking and seemingly ready to be the next star. Can he handle the pressure? Is his music up to snuff with what’s out there these days? What distinguishes him?  With his growing presence, the main question is who is he? WHere did he come from. His first attempt to put some of those concerns to rest is this pre-album #Luke.

The work is full of original production and is well put together. There is a certain amount of gravity on the album that raises your eyebrows. I’m not really settled on whether it’s something I can stand behind, but this is certainly not a snatch and grab mission. there was time put into this artist and this is not baby music or pop/flash in the pan music. Vocally he’s a softer Tyrese which is not a bad thing. There are elements of sex, because that sells, there are pounding lows but the production is richly layered and not full of the synth that has been dominating the charts the last few years.

Take a listen. It may be your cup of tea. I wouldn’t say that his music is undeniable but I will say that real work was done with this artist and he’s given enough to make me interested in seeing how this project and his career arc turn out. #Luke. Enjoy.
