There is a feeling these days that artists, and Hip-Hoppers in particular are infected with the disease of me. Sure there’s the typical response to earthquakes and floods and Sean Bells and Oscar Grants, but for the most part, the most visible representatives of the culture seem engrossed in foamposites and shining rather than the things that are going on in the world.
But not Wordspit. The underdog emcee keeps shining with live performances and dollar van rapping McDonald’s commercials and all that good stuff. This time around the kid takes a piece of the Roc and takes a swing at AIDS with his recent show at S.O.B’s. On September 26th, WordSpit and Team ILLest put together the “Rise of The ILLest,” sponsored by clothing company Rocawear in partnership with MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation, which helps raise awareness on HIV/AIDS as well as educate on how to prevent contracting the disease. The event featured multiple products, show tickets, and New Era hats raffled off to help raise money for the foundation.
Assembled on stage were painter Demont (most known for painting during Raheem DeVaughn performances), R&B male group Phaze 3, acoustic guitar player/singer Olamide, R&B singer Cocoa Sarai, Hip- Hop recording artist Dremur and headliner, Wordspit, who collectively rocked a packed house. Here’s the vid and the behind the scenes footage for the evening. Enjoy.
