The second single from Robin Thicke’s impending album, Love After War is upon us and it confirms Thicke’s return to a more mature sound after the head scratcher that was Sex Therapy. Well… half of Sex Therapy. But isn’t it always the bad half that we remember?
Anyway, “Pretty Lil Heart” is a smooth, jazzy cut with great stair-step horns, brushes on the toms and a wonderfully lazy guitar. The arrangement is Bond-esque with sonic peaks, valleys and breaks. Thicke’s vocals are breathy, like he’s singing from a hammock and the vibe is definitely grown and sexy. There’s only one problem; the Lil Wayne feature is about as necessary here as it was on that kooky Jason Mraz song. In other words, it’s not.
I know R&B and Hip Hop are like side show Siamese twins these days, but Wayne sounds massively out of place here. Cut that part out Mr. Thicke and you’re in business. After hearing both “Pretty Lil Heart” and the title cut, I’m starting to think Love After War is something to look forward to.
