Tech N9ne is going to drop his 4th all collab album, Welcome To Strangeland, in about a month and “The Noose” is his work with ¡Mayday! Yes, it’s as dark as the title sounds, if not more. But what else would you expect from the folks at Strange Music?
A slow arpeggiated guitar starts the song with some echoed thump and digital cymbal washes in tow. There’s not much more to the track. A weepy electric guitar and some strings join in during Maydays first verse, but the simplicity is pretty perfect. It does have a pop feel to it, but the themes eliminate the bubble gum.
Mayday courts the idea of the world being godless and hate engendering tragedy. Is this the best it’s going to get? Gun violence plagues the kids. No one seems to care. The only outlet is inebriation and embracing the dark and death. Damn. Sounds a bit melodramatic I know, but there are folks among us in this pit.
Tech N9ne recalls visits to injured soldiers and how the war culture skews mores. Giving your life in the line of duty is something he can’t wrap is mind around, but 18-year old boys do it every day. He suggests you think about that when you’re in line at Starbucks or filling up the ride for a weekend road trip.
This song is hella depressing, but it’s beautiful in it’s generosity. This is the kind of intimacy that gets lost in the commerce of Hip-Hop. Appreciate it.
