Mary J Blige is about to drop her 10th album, My Life II, a follow up to 1994’s My Life and a second single has been dropped on the net. “Mr. Wrong” features emo thugga Drake and some pretty standard, synthesized production from Jim Jonson and Rico Love.
The foggy music box twinkles are cute and reminiscent of “Pretty Wings,” but this is paint by numbers beat making.
Mary sounds good, but not amazing. There’s really no point in the song for her to stretch it, but she’s competent. The story is also pretty warmed over. Chasing the bad boy and not being able to stop yourself. The chorus is some obvious Billy Paul homage, unless you don’t know who Billy Paul is; then it’s not.
Drake plays the bad guy, explaining his bad behavior and the fact that ladies are mesmerized by it. He would be the best part of the song if it wasn’t for the chorus.
Anyway, it’s an okay song; hopefully not a sign of the quality of the album. The Drake name carries a lot of weight right now so I’m sure this is a star power move. “Mr. Wrong.” Take a listen
