When I saw the title to this song, I immediately thought of Francis Ford Coppola’s film, The Outsiders and the strangely placed Stevie Wonder song that played during the credits. I swear I don’t remember seeing a black person or any signs that black people existed in this flick. The main characters were way to poor to have maids, but it is what it is.
Amazingly enough, The Big Pink said “Stay Gold” was partially inspired by the Robert Frost poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” which was also recited in The Outsiders while Ponyboy and Johnny were on the run from the coppers. See how I brought that full circle?
Anyway. The Big Pink’s “Stay Gold” is okay I guess. Something has to be said for any song with a positive message. And being a light-filled beacon for others to follow is pretty positive. I still like Stevie’s song better, but you might not. Take a listen.
Just in case you don’t know the Lil Stevie tune, here you go.
