It appears the jury is still out in traditional Hip-Hop circles on Shabazz Palaces. The duo’s recent album, Black Up, has plenty of alterna-sites hyping it as one of the best rap albums of 2011. Which begs the question, “How many rap albums have you listened to this year?” I guess that’s irrelevant though. But can you really call this just rap? Is it genre appropriate in any space? Or is this something completely new? I’m not sure. I’ve had a hard enough time digesting Black Up to realize I probably don’t love this sound. However, I respect what these cats are doing. Anything beats a snare and a bottle of Ace Of Spades these days. Then again, that might be me fighting change.
*Cues Black Up in the iPod… Again.
Anyway, I checked this video over at Gorilla vs. Bear. Its an alternate version of “The Kings New Clothes Were Made By His Own Hands” that was recorded during Gorilla vs. Bear’s music fest this summer. Get hip.
