After spending so much time crafting the incredibly layered production on his instrumental album Rock Creek Park, it’s only right that Oddisee and the crew drop some lyrics over the music. He and his Diamond District brethren do exactly that over the very dope “For Certain.”The track is fresh but familiar with a hook that references “Aquemini” (nothing is for sho, nothing is for certain) while the rhythm section features the sample that made Mary J and Grand puba’s duet “What’s The 411?” so funky. The bassline and those waterfall keys are still intact while buttressed on this contruction with staggered horns similar to the ones on Redman’s EPMD debut “Hadcore.” The result is a hard-hitting composition that bobs heads and provides a great track from the emcees.
There is a sobering acceptance of life within the confines of the song. The chorus speaks to the certainty that runs will end and the certainty that what rises eventually falls.
“Nothing is fo certain / nothing is fo sho / so until they close the curtain, we gon have to do the show / Sho up, sho out, sho off, sho down / wit anybody around / it go off.” – Oddisee
Once you accept that, it’s up to you to get everything out of that high that you can and sweat out the lows when you must. yU notes, “Progress is why I don’t rest / used to be the most fresh / now I care less / we gotta re-invent,” speaking on the changes we make to survive the times.
Uptowm XO addresses how important it is to live for the moment with a tomorrow that isn’t promised. He writes,”Had a dream / an angel told me remember / it can all be over in the snap of a finger / I say what I say because this movie could end today.”
The beat knocks and the emcees rock. On thing that’s “For Certain” is when the Diamond District hop on a track together, magic is sure to ensue.
