I bumped into Kirko Bangz a few months ago, before he was really getting his push from the label. It was at a listening party for one of his mixtapes as he fought for traction and to get people to take notice of his music. I thought most of the tape sounded a bit Young Money-ish, but he did have a presence behind the mic. He was a likable guy, with a bit of moxie but he was very raw to the business of this thing and probably not used to being asked real questions and being interviewed. It’s cool, happens to everyone when that mic is pushed in their face and no music is playing. We tried to get to the heart of who he was as an artist and we learned some interesting things about him. We got to the bottom of his name and a few other basic things. Watch and see what makes him who he is. I pushed him a little, like I do everyone the planet interviews when we are trying to get to the heart of who they are. For the most part, he took it like a man and didn’t storm off the set on some Chris Brown shit and for a young guy, I tip my hat to him, he kept his composure.
Planet Ill will always try and get people on the cusp of making their leap and before the strain of the industry catch hold of them. I think this is the kid awkward and honest and as a fan, you’ll appreciate this once all the answers become polished and all the interviews begin to look alike.
He’ll get better with time as far as dealing with media and sharing the persona he wants his fans to have. And after you see the finished product, which could be dope depending on what decisions are made in his career, you can always come back to this starting point and see what is was like to get an artist at their most raw and innocent. Peace.
