Indiesent Exposure is designed to give your ears some respite from some of the daily audio wackness that bombards the masses through the mainstream radio’s definitions of good music.
If you like what you hear and download, PLEASE support (monetarily and otherwise) these artists as much as you can in the future by hitting up their websites, purchasing some product, going to their shows, etc.
This week’s Indiesent Exposure article is going to hit heads with the AfroFuturistic sonic movement called BeatJazz.
Here we go:
Berlin, Germany’s Onyx Ashanti’s has created a jamming mixture of music that’s a pretty dope blend of Funk, Jazz, Electronica, Drum + Bass and Soul Music that he calls BeatJazz.
Ashanti creatively mixes sounds from analog and electronic instruments and samples, including some of his own invention, to make freeform grooves that diverge from “four on the floor” dance tunes to concoct an abstract audio travels Sun Ra-meets-“Lost In Space” aesthetic. Onyx Ashanti’s slow to high tempo songs on the 2 EPs below display the combo of strong passion and solid musicality that will titillate any adventurous listener.
Here is a brief description from Onyx Ashanti’s on what BeatJazz is:
Beatjazz is, in my mind, the natural offspring of jazz and electronic music. The devil is in the details though.
When I say “jazz”, I mean the concept of jazz. In my mind (all of this comes from my own personal artistic perspective unless otherwise noted), jazz is the art of improvisation.
The ability to extrapolate abstract concepts with only minor guides; key, chord progression, tempo, style, etc. it is the ability to convey oneself in any artistic circumstance. side note; IMHO, jazz has been hi jacked, abused, raped and robbed of its power over time by various HWI’s (hacks with instruments)…
Now, when I use the term “Beat”, I mean Rhythm, or rather computer generated rhythm. I do not mean to insinuate a stylistic connotation by its use. In other Words, by beat, I don’t mean hip hop OR drum n Bass OR house OR Breakbeat OR….I mean the common aspects of all of them.
“Beatjazz” therefore is a technical concept of rhythm-centric improvisation.”
Besides the futuristic way his music is created (check out the videos below to see how wild heads go with the live performances), Onyx Ashanti’s music is woth exploring for anyone who feels like trying something different in Black Music, yet appreciates creative jazz improvisation.
