It’s that time folks. Time to talk freestyles, remixes and all things swindled in the world of music recently. Before I begin though, there are a couple things I need to get off my chest. One thing is definitely this Kreayshawn hoopla.
Don’t be mad at Kreayshawn. Be mad at that name, but don’t be mad at her. If someone walked up to you and said we will pay you millions to paint a mural on the side of the Sears Tower, are you going to decline because you can’t draw stick people? Of course not. Are you going to say hey, there is some really talented artist who has been living off of Ramen noodles and Twizzlers for years waiting on this opportunity? Of course not. You’re going to take the money, draw that horrific stick person on the side of the building and get out of town.

This is what we as a culture allowed to happen the day the check outranked the art. Suck it up and understand we took the road to appropriation a long time ago. Oh, and stop bitching about Drake’s new song. That’s the steez that made him famous. Everyone is entitled to a little whining and crying. At least Drake doesn’t lock himself in the bathroom to do it. Anyway, on with the show. First up is The Weeknd with… you guessed it.. “Trust Issues.”
I don’t know why I hear him saying I pawned one. Someone get this kid a contract. Life is tight for The Weeknd obviously. I didn’t think I liked this young man’s voice, but he’s a bit more aggressive in his delivery here, adding some strength I didn’t think existed. I don’t believe these are the same lyrics, but is this version man approved? Someone hip me to the machismo rules.
Lola Monroe – Run The World Remix
Next we have Lola Monroe. I know the last time I posted a song by her I said it would never happen again. And by chance if I didn’t say it, I’m sure I thought it. But here she is again in the hallowed pages of Planet Ill. Her remix of Beyonce’s “Run The World” isn’t bad. She drags her words to the point I can’t understand her at times, but she kept up with the track and that deserves some recognition.
We have some more stolen Drake. “Marvin’s Room” gets a lot of freestyle love considering how much everyone disliked it, but whatever. Los is not a singer. That will be all.
Lindbergh Palace – Wicked Game
Moving on we have Lindbergh Palace with Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.” I could complain about this chick’s singing chops, but why? Isaak is no Luther, but he still managed to produce a classic piece of material. The percussion seems out of synch in spots and I miss the background vocals on the chorus, but it’s a noble attempt.
Last up is Jean Grae, who is a much better singer than Los. Anyway, she’s added a ladies touch to Kanye’s “Blame Game.” I think you could probably call this song “Trust Issues” too. A dude with a wandering eye and too many umm… friends evokes some serious thought in Ms. Grae and the negative side of the mixed feelings ends up weighing more than the love. Nicely done.
One more thing. In honor of Chris Isaak’s 55th birthday. How about the original “Wicked Game.” Enjoy.
