Young Chris may be the best rapper you think you know. Yeah, you remember those Young Gunz albums when the Roc still looked like Gibraltar. You’ve heard Jigga’s whisper flow and wondered why Chris did it too (here’s a hint, it’s his style). And then it all fell apart. Second album didn’t do so well, State Property lost its momentum and cohesion and the boys from Philly got left holding the bag.
Now the pieces on the board are reshuffled and Chris is free from Def Jam captivity but no longer under the House of Hov. No immigration to Roc Nation. Then came a couple Don Cannon mixtapes (The Network 1 and 2) and a signing with Rico Love. Then the monstrous regional hit (and all its remixes) “Philly Shit.” A recent seizure on stage at a show in NYC led to even more questions regarding Young Chris and his future.
We caught up with Chris to discuss whether Philly Hip-Hop got its just due, what’s going on with his career, whether there are any hard feelings with Jay-Z and whether that seizure was something more ominous than we were led to believe. Young Chris: Philly Mignon. Part 1.
