The Rome Project Introduces You To The World

By shelz.

The folks over here at Planet Ill are shaking with anticipation over the Danger Mouse/ Daniele Luppi project Rome that should be hitting US shelves May 17th.  Okay, maybe I’m the only one shaking with anticipation, but this is shaping up to be a grand piece of work. We’ve already heard three tracks from the album; “Two Against One,”  “Black” and “The Rose With A Broken Neck.”  Next up is the album closer, “The World.”

A lonely guitar sits atop a foundation crafted with a slow bassline, battlefield snare and layers of wood wind atmospherics.  The addition of the bouncy keys at the beginning of the verse transports this song back to the 60’s and a thin sheet of background chorals adds a spiritual feeling.  Not a churchy spiritual feeling, but a looking-up-to-the-heavens-right-before-the-hangman-pulls-the-lever-on-the-gallows spiritual feeling.

Jack White returns with layered vocals that span the note spectrum similar to “Two Against One.” It takes every one of those voices to explain the world as Mr. White sees it; perfect like a circle, both in its hospitality and disdain because it has neither. The world is fair, yet unforgiving and will watch you destroy yourself with no care or remorse. Mother Earth gives you all the tools and energy you need.  You can use them to better yourself or hang yourself.  The choice is yours.

“The World” is powerful in its honesty and White’s cool delivery imparts the world’s indifference wonderfully.  It’s obvious at this point that Rome is a tightly-knit, well-crafted, top notch concept album with thought provoking lyrics and a definitive course  I think shaking with anticipation may be an understatement.  “The World” is yours.  Enjoy.
