Jadakiss and Styles P have been working on EPMD-type chemistry for years to the point where they are almost a subgroup within The Lox. They pass the mic back and forth within verse better than almost any two man team and that familiarity is evident of this gully number from Kiss’ upcoming I Love You mixtape, “Lay Em Down.”
The beat is late 90’s early millennium grit, with a pacing piano and deep note strikes for drama a la The People’s Court theme song. A punchy drum runs beneath punctuating with booms at the end of the measure. Chynk Show mans the hook with all the energy that the slow-mo veterans would find hard to muster. There isn’t much beat deviation but it bumps in that face-frown inducing way.
Kiss and Styles pop that street junk, with furs and whips and all the spoils of the fast life. If you owe them then pay them. Of course that obnoxious Jada signature a haaa is in full effect but it’s not all over the track. They tag team the body count the same way they tag team the verses and it’s refreshing not to have the basic my 16 your 16 structure. They finish each other’s lines and that’s what’s up.
There’s nothing new here: jewels, street talk, whips and chips. The camaraderie and the throwback vibe lift the song past Pedestrianville and the hard beat is good enough to bump. More tracks like this would be evidence that Jadakiss hasn’t lost much over the years, if not having added anything new to his arsenal.
