It was probably seen as imperative for J. Cole to release something, anything after the unfortunate circumstances know as “Disgusting.” No biggie. You can’t hit it out the park every time. Even Barry Bonds struck out. “See It to Believe It,” Cole’s latest offering to the residents of Cole World may not be a home run, but its solid and eases some of the frowny faces that popped up last week.
The track is a melancholy orchestral piece; a gathering of strings into intimate chamber music construction with a cello taking center stage. Some percussion balances the foundation with a clap on top like a bow. Nice.
Mr. Cole talks about the journey, what he’s been able to accomplish and where he plans to go from here. Self-assured and focused, Cole chases his dream with the same ferocity he uses when chasing the ladies. The lyrics morph from hard living to high rise contentment as the good life closes in. He’s been able to accomplish things you never will and that’s before he even drops his debut album. I’ll believe that when I see it.
J. Cole and his dwindling momentum really needed a shot in the arm and this song is exactly that. Hopefully, Jermaine will prove me wrong and bring a full-length project this summer. Or we may instead see the fall of the Cole World, before it’s even built. “See It To Believe It.” Enjoy.
