Coming off the generally well-received release of his EP, Lovers Holiday; Theophilus London prepares to let loose his first proper studio album, Timez Are Weird These Days. The album could easily take him from underground darling to mainstream honey. So what’s first? An introduction.
“Last Name London,” the first single from the album, is a short romp through the world of the jet-setting, surprise hipster poster boy and sex symbol. He gives a lesson on the pronunciation of his first name and a rundown of what it’s like to lay some vocals on a track in Stockholm just to take in dinner in Paris. He also flaunts stories of his lady magnetism. She got naked on Skype? Don’t be jealous. He’s kind of the shit. At least he thinks so. You better recognize.
The track all of this ego is appended to is from John Hill, best known for his work with Christina Aguilera (“Bionic”) and Shakira (“Waka Waka”). He carves out a synth-drenched dance piece, with odd moaning, almost rapturous vocals layered on top and thump that darts in and out of London’s lyrical traffic. It’s tribal without the cliché drums and clubby without the overbearing electro-screech. Mr. Hill did a nice job with this.
Anyway, Timez Are Weird These Days is on its way and from the sounds of this song, London has polished his delivery and upped the ante on his production; the two things he desperately needed on Lovers’ Holiday. So far, so good. His name is Theophilus. “Last Name London.” Get familiar.
