Sometimes our enemies become the biggest source of our strength. You get so used to defending yourself or answering charges that you’re anaesthetized to the hate. Aubrey Graham has been getting shade for a while now, from street dudes to rappers think they are better than him (who really aren’t). It’s given him an edge lately that is filtering into his rhymes, mostly to his benefit. He’s developing that early Jay-Z armor or aloofness. It’s clearly evident on his latest track, “Dreams Money Can Buy,” named after a 1947 movie of the same name about a man who sells tailor-made dreams to frustrated and neurotic people. Much the way entertainers prey on the aspirational dreams of listeners with Ducati dreams and Datsun dough.
“Don’t fuck with me” is whispered and repeated at different interval throughout the song in high falsetto. There are ghostly wails the whirl throughout the beat, alternating foreground and background. There is ambient synth in a generally sparse background. He sings at certain intervals during the second verse but sparingly, increasing the effect of melody.
Drake’s voice is slowly losing that nasal quality it has when he raises it and he’s finding different tonal deliveries that suit him better. The first verse is concerned with his accomplishments and achievements paired against his desires and aspirations. There is a measured arrogance in his voice that adds credence to his stature. He’d address you now and stunt on you but the trappings he has obtained are now commonplace and he can’t be bothered with you. He’s not surprised at his ascension because he’s put in the work and if you’re not okay with it then fuck you.
His second verse is where he takes the haters to task, relegating them to less than nothing. They don’t even arise in his conversations. I’ll let him tell it:
Can’t tell you how much I love when n****s think they got it and I love the fact that line made ‘em think about it
YM/CMB these niggas make it so hard to be friendly when I know part of it’s envy
Trying to fill the shoes n***a so far, these are empty I take ‘em off in the house because the throw carpets are Fendi
Whoo! I never seen the car you claim to drive, or shit I seen it, you just ain’t inside
And I feel lately it went from top 5 to remaining 5, my favorite rappers either lost it or they ain’t alive
And they trying to bring us down, me, Weezy and Stunna/ We stayed up, Christmas lights in the middle of summer
I like this evolution of Drake. He’s slowly creeping towards his real potential and mixing up that singing and rapping to enhance both. Hopefully on this album they will leave him to his own devices. Until then that’s probably only a dream money can buy. Enjoy.
