Afternoon cartoon used to the that ish. You come home after the long school day, (hopefully) do your homework, get your peanut butter and jelly sandwich and sit down to watch the latest. Back before cartoons started talking too much or introducing so many subliminal messages, there was just good vs. evil.
One of the best shows had to be Thundercats, a tale of alien cat people, escaping their war-torn planet, led by an orphaned lion cub prince whose father the king sacrificed his life for the crew to live. They crash landed on Third Earth where they fought for all of those truth and justice principles that sound silly to grownups but that kids are still dumb enough (or smart enough) to still espouse and believe in. Their theme music was a tad Fame/Broadway jazzy, the graphics were slick, Japanese-style animation and the cast of characters appealed to a wide range of people.
Times haven’t been so nice to the cartoon. Pokemon and DragonballZ type cartoons have taken the attention of the kids away from that old school action. One of the original writers of the series was even murdered last year. The ‘Cats had found sanctuary in the comic books and in the resurgence of 80’s t-shirts so while they were gone, they were not forgotten.
The Cartoon Channel is bringing the cats back and unlike that garbage ass He-Man remake from a few years back, it looks to be fairly faithful to the original in terms of storyline and characterization. the animation is a bit more serious to account for the growing sophistication and decreased wonder of cartoon watching children (as well as the increased number of adults that consume cartoons) Here’s the most recent trailer for your enjoyment. Feel the magic, hear the roar, Thundercats are loose. I hope Panthro still has the Thundertank. That ride was so cool.
