Saul Williams does it all. Writer, actor, poet, rapper. He’s a true renaissance man in every sense of the word, but don’t get the jack off all trades moniker out. He’s a bit too good for that. It’s been 4 years since his last album, The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust, and fans are anxiously awaiting his next. But fret not stans (me included,) it looks like Mr. Williams has released a new single to check the lay of the land.
The track for “Rocket” starts with a sample of MC Shan’s “The Bridge” with a descending synth overlay to add a bit of drama. Then the music meanders into something that sounds similar to “Are You Ready?” from Richard Ashcroft’s odd side project The United Nations of Sound. Guitars similar to “Baba O’Riley’s” are introduced right before the break.
The lyrics compare Saul to .. you guessed it.. a rocket. He’s the constant gardener of his own destiny, tending to it with pride and diligence until one day he blooms and takes off. No drugs, no help, he’s high on himself and the night is his. Nicely stated even if a bit cliché.
“Rocket” isn’t my favorite Saul Williams song. Even with the samples and great theme, it’s flat. Maybe within the scheme of the album this will make sense, but as a standalone song, I’m not loving it. I’d rather listen to Shan.
