In 2011, what are the odds that you can get a danceable duet that is layered with real instruments and features credible vocalists of both sexes? I didn’t take statistics, but I’m willing to bet that they aren’t that high on the mainstream level. Lucky for you guys Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton have decided to resurrect the spirit of those late 70’s Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack duets with Jill’s latest single “So In Love.”
You hear the bass and hear the whisks and the high hats cooking up atmosphere. You hear that two-step rhythm and the well-arranged chorus with that hand clapping accent. If you’re old enough you probably caught yourself trying to do the Hustle. If you’re from the Chi, you’re charmed enough by that sparse piano and those dithering strings to step in the name of love. No matter what was your era those ad libs and the spare vocals touch you, especially if you just got paid, it’s Friday night, and you can’t wait to go out.
Jill Scott and Hamilton have a definite chemistry and the song is arranged so well that they each have their way in the grand conversation and it doesn’t get sappy or too passionate. You don’t get weighed down by everlasting love but you’re absolutely aware that it’s what they feel for each other. The funk allows Hamilton to abandon that heaviness in his vocals and just be the powerful vocalist he is; devoid of that Black pain that often resonates in his work.
This song is infectious and will make anyone that can dance, boogie. If you’re used to standing on the wall, hands on your balls, lighting up drugs in the club, this probably isn’t for you. But if you’re ready to grab the nearest person (whatever your pleasure is) and shake that ass in synch, then this is for you. “So in Love.” Get on the floor.
