Instead of waiting on the Late Night open call, Homeboy Sandman has decided to take his fate into his own hands and release the audition tape before the audition. Sandman has made his intentions clear with his latest song, “I Knew.” He wants to be on Jimmy Fallon’s show and he wants ?uestlove to be the one who invites him.
The foundation is a collection of almost sparse performances from the percussion, guitars, horns, bass and organ. But rolled all together it’s a rich, jazzy head-nodder. The layers are added slowly, under the radar as you listen intently to Sandman’s lyrics. As great as the track is (he gives production credit to Von Pea of Tanya Morgan at the end), it still plays second fiddle to the narrative about late night destiny.
He’s laid it all out. He already knows the song is a winner. He also knows he’s a winner even without the cash and the gaudy jewelry. If ?uest doesn’t respond, Sandman promises to go on with his eyes on the prize because even if it’s not on Late Night, his ascension to the ranks of the revered is inevitable.
We’d rather see it happen on Late Night though. The Roots featuring Homeboy Sandman? Sounds dope. Listen until the end. He’s arranged the whole performance. C’mon ?uest. You know you wanna.
