Estelle Feat. Rick Ross: Break My Heart

By Odeisel

Many people were in uproar when Rick Ross got down with Diddy, looking like Biggie 2.0. With all the work he’s been doing lately Ross probably has loftier goals, trying to be James Brown 2.0, the hardest working man in show business. He’s signing rappers left and right, while also being on tour, while dropping his own mixtapes and guesting on his artists projects. He’s also readying a new album. Even with all this going on, he has time to collaborate with other artists. This time around he’s on Estelle’s “Break My Heart” from her coming album All of Me.

Strings guide the melody and the drums add a pinch of muscle while the bassline adds all the character. It’s urban contemporary with a bit of added funk, with rolling drums providing some dynamism to keep the beat rolling.

Estelle sings of a lover secure in himself who wants no part of the spot light and can deal with her pretentious nature. One problem: she’s got trust issues from previous heartbreak and has little desire to take that road again. Of course that prevents her from being open enough to find new love and that’s the Catch 22 of love. She’s got questions about herself and his intentions and she doesn’t want to waste any time.

Ross is all muscle on this, immersed in the highlife and the misguided Bonnie and Clyde of it all. Fell in love with shorty? Blame it on the chemistry. I don’t know about all that higher than the higher power stuff he’s talking, but he makes it sound good. Let’s not forget the obligatory shopping sprees and cars. No mainstream rap verse with a chick is complete without it.

Ross doesn’t really speak to Estelle’s concerns but the song sounds good and it’s well-produced/arranged. Another win for the boss, while Estelle makes further inroads to the hood. That’s a combo that won’t break the hearts of any music fan. “Break my heart. Enjoy.
