Rome wasn’t built in a day. Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi’s Rome, has taken at least four years, depending on what you take as the starting point. Instead of Romulus and Remus they have enlisted Jack White and Norah Jones, who have taken turn introducing people to the album with “Two Against One” and “Black” respectively. It’s White’s turn again with the latest leak from Rome, “The Rose With A Broken Neck.”
Layers of guitars and wah-wah strings are pancaked by tiered, background vocals that add melodrama to White. Soft drums and high-hat construction allows for the introspection and emotion of White’s lyrics to shine. There is a fluid feel to the rhythm that holds the vocals from drowning in melancholy.
White sings of loneliness, referring to the tracks on his arm and his life as a train wreck. He ponders what a mess he has made with all he has been given. The harsh reality of life has worn him down, twisting what was once so full of promise into something distorted, with the thorns of the allegorical rose more prominent than the flower.
Another richly layered track from the album we can’t wait to get our hands on. Each of these releases feel larger than the headphones as if there should be an actual movie to accompany this music; more a score than music for music’s sake. “Rose With A Broken Neck” furthers the tortured tale of the gunman. Enjoy.
