You know I was just talking about this the other day. I know tens of folks who, with stars in their eyes and twinkles in their toes, ran their happy asses up, down or over to New York City thinking they were going to crash the party, and in turn, become the toast of the town. Most of them returned to wherever it was they came from with their tail between their legs. That’s one place that can beat the dream out of you if you’re half-assing.
Black Rob’s single “Can’t Make It In New York” will be featured on his upcoming Duck Down release, Game Tested, Streets Approved. The track rolls out in a subdued fashion that conjures thoughtfulness and borders on melancholy. Simple layers of mid-tempo percussion along with a tambourine are joined by some electric keys and a descending line of synth that adds an eerie edge. It’s the type of track that cedes control to the the MC, but still has his back.
Rob warns the weak that New York is no place to be without a back bone, but it’s the best place to engender a family feel in the streets if a group of folks with steel balls have a common goal. The bullets fly, but the money flows and the streets are magnetic for those who are smart enough to run them.
“Can’t Make It In New York” is a cautionary tale full of grenades, whips and even a shout to Black Caesar. It trumpets NY’s reputation of high risk and high reward and makes you think twice about wanting to be a part of it. But don’t feel bad if you can’t hack it. You aren’t alone. Fed Ex may no longer be hiring, but I’m pretty sure your mom kept your room just how you left it.
