Nina Simone’s song, “Mississippi Goddamn,” was a statement of exasperation and outrage. The treatment of people of color in southern states was so over the top with ignorance, it was all she could say.
“Mississippi Goddamn!”
Medger Evers had been murdered. The church bombing in Alabama that killed four innocent little girls was fresh in everyone’s mind and Simone felt that the Civil Rights movement was crawling to its grave. It is one of the most powerful pieces of protest music ever written and possibly one of the last pieces of music I’d ever consider a white rapper sampling.
Well Yelawolf has taken that leap, and trotted out one ambitious piece of music via the XXL Freshman mixtape, “Alabama Gotdamn.” The track uses Nina’s bouncy piano as its foundation. Piled on top is some synth, swirling strings and percussion.
The narrative is about Yela traveling from place to place with his Crimson Tide banner and introducing himself to the country until everybody knows about Alabama.
I don’t particularly like this song or what he’s done with the sample. It sounds a little busy to me. However, I believe this song, as hectic as it is, shows Yela’s promise as an emcee willing to take risks. They don’t always work as we can see here. But you can’t hit it out of the park unless you take a home run swing. This release simply makes Mr. Yelawolf a more interesting artist and one of the leaders of this freshman pack.
