These days if you speak on something like this you’re locked in the conscious box and relegated to the periphery. Some like Talib Kweli chafe against that label while others embrace it. Either way right is right and it’s always good to hear a rapper spit that real shit. Not the drug dealer real shit, but the teach your children how to handle themselves when their car is eventually stopped by the police shit.
Thurz wasn’t about to let this peculiar holiday pass without giving it it’s proper due. His track “Rodney King” is rife with tension and drama and the energy appropriate for such an occasion. Raw Hip-Hop. About something real. Unflinching, frank and honest.
Police radio and siren samples color the intro and the breaks while Thurz tells the story of King from a first person perspective. The initial verse tells the tale of the events prior to the chase, with King and homies watching the game drinking and smoking. The second verse switches energy chronicling the chase and subsequent incident. The track is brought to a close with a steely spoken word verse that oozes righteous anger and defiance.
Thurz knocks this track out the park on this one. Shout out to the families of Sean Bell and Oscar Grant. Shout to Thurz for saying something. “Rodney King.” 20 Years later and we’re still not all just getting along.
