Prometheus Bound, the rock opera based on the ancient Greek tragedy, is not only wowing audiences, but kicking out great music as well. The first pay for play piece from the show is “The Hunger,” a cold and melancholy track written by System of a Down’s Sej Tankian and performed by Shirley Manson.
Don’t expect any SOAD sonic shenanigans here though, Serj was restrained in his expression, but still managed to create a wave of emotion that’s ridden well by Garbage’s first lady. Considering the play is about a man who is chained to a rock as punishment prior to his impending death, it’s safe to say sad is what they were going for. They succeeded beautifully.
The intro builds with what sounds like a child’s electric organ and a echoing guitar. A little out of synch percussion and airy distortion are placed gently on top. The assemblage crawls slowly forward as Shirley begins to sing only to welcome a dirge like organ that adds a sinister touch. Manson deep half sung half spoken lyrics round out the morose theme and paint the whole song blue.
“The Hunger” as well as the play it comes from, is a tribute to and a charity piece for Amnesty International, with all proceeds going to the charity. Garbage fans, Ms. Manson is back in the studio with the band and should be dropping something in the summertime. Hopefully, this will tide you over until then. “The Hunger.” Enjoy.
