Back in 2009, a rapper named Savant submitted his work to Planet Ill for review. He had been a reader, and like many who aspire, he wanted to see how his work would stand examination. I was hesitant to view it because I didn’t want to shit on it, but in the end I relented. It wasn’t great. You could tell he needed a bit of work.
It wasn’t trash, and you could hear where he could improve with effort and homework so I reviewed the album and beat it up with some tough love. If he took it to heart and wanted to improve, the review would hip him to things that you may not be able to hear when you’re in the booth. Conversely he could have taken the f**k you, hater approach that’s so rampant in Hip-Hop and in society these days.
Fast forward to 2011 and I got an mp3 in the mailbox called “Rely On Me.” Lo and behold Savant was featured on the track, so I decided to give it a spin since I haven’t really heard anything from him musically. His performance was a quantum leap from what he had on his album, so much so that we featured the song (p.s. you can hear our songs on your iPod/iPad/iPhone/Android phone).
Savant happened to be on a mini tour in the Northeast so we decided to catch up with him and see how his career has progressed and what obstacles he has faced and whether or not he took the hard review personal. He spilled the beans on the work, the music, a couple parents resistant to his dreams, and who’s the greatest rapper of all-time from Newark.
