Conceived in Nicaragua during the Sandinista War, born and raised in San Francisco by a single mother, Bay Area rapper Roach Gigz came into this world with quite a story. Like most kids of his era he grew up with aspirations of being a rapper and formed a group with homie Lil 4 Tay called Bitch I Go (B.I.G.). While managing to scrape together a bit of local notoriety, it soon became aparent that any momentum the Go had, got up and went and so Roach (who gets his name from the Friday character) decided to strike out on his own.
The first thing he had to do was realize that his skill set just wasn’t enough. And so he began to train, dropping mixtape after mixtape, culminating with his most recent work, Roachy Balboa, a reference to both his half Italian lineage and the work he constantly put in to improve as a rapper. Planet Ill sat down with him recently to discuss his career, his origins, what he loves about this music and what inspires him. It went a little something like this:
