It’s been a while since I’ve thrown myself into a new artist that everyone raves about, primarily because folks tend to rave about not so great things. People seem to like this Wolf Golf Cart Gang a lot. So, I didn’t immediately listen because I don’t even trust y’all like that.
They performed with The Roots on Jimmy Fallon’s show and folks were acting like Jesus showed up with white girls, the wheel, sliced bread and bacon. I can’t begin to explain how many cool points Mos Def lost that night. But that’s fine I guess. As long as the masses are rambling about some group whose name they won’t remember this time next year, I have the market cornered on cool artists like Nick Cannon.
The day comes though, when you have to do it. You have to bite the bullet and do like the Romans do. Like saying swag and doing the wobble. Sometimes the majority rule is just too strong. So I picked a song. I just happened to come across it today over here so I sat down and listened.
“Mystery” by Hodgy Beats greets you with a great Moody Blues sample. Sound familiar? Think Masta Ace’s “Dear Diary.” The voices of the band sound like they’ve been sped up just a tad and run through a machine to hollow them out. Some wood winds are looped and placed on top, replacing the more melancholy horns on the original. What sounds like a single organ chord ties it all together and adds some texture. Producer Bambeeno does a decent job with this.
Hodgy rants about living the life like Prince Hakeem and popping big name tags. There is plenty of chest thumping as Mr. Beats explains that he’s sick. He’s clean. He has Wolf Gang swag and some pretty hot bitches servicing him to boot.
Well, it’s not enough to make me scream swag into a late night camera, but I’m pleasantly surprised and will listen further. Not that these lil dudes care, but at least, I can give the stans another chance. This time y’all might not be completely wrong.
