With the summer comes blockbusters and among those is the movie adaptation of Marvel Comics’ oldest superhero, Captain America, who happens to be celebrating his 70th year of existence in 2011. Despite the obvious jingoist origins, Captain America evolved as a legitimate character to become the moral center and the greatest hero of the Marvel Universe.
Such a hero has to have an opposite that is as sinister and evil as Captain America is good, and it doesn’t get any more sinister than his arch nemesis The Red Skull, ex-henchman of Hitler’s 3rd Reich who wants nothing less than the nihilism and the end to the American ideal.
The movie, Captain America: The First Avenger is set for a July 22 release. Hugo Weaving signed on the play the Skull, but until now, there has only been a glimpse of him in full costume, seen during the Super Bowl trailer. Look no further. Entertainment Weekly today, in an interview with the film’s Director, Joe Johnson finally showed Weaving in all his evil glory. The image speaks for itself.
