Big K.R.I.T. is another emcee that folks are writing big checks for. Hopefully, when Returnof 4Eva drops in a couple of weeks, his ass (or emcee skills) will be able to cash them. So far, the sneak peek into the album is promising, including his latest booth to net release, “Time Machine.”
This song sounds like a blaxploitation film set in space. The retro smooth track features some great smoky guitar work and a spacey synth that works well with the theme. There’s some scratching on the chorus and a stuttering bassline that round out the foundation. Get your doorway beads and lava lamps out of storage; K.R.I.T. is trying to take you way back.
K.R.I.T. is attempting to paint an old school picture with the lyrics. They aren’t set in the same time frame as the feel of the track though. He only reaches back as far as cassette tapes and Starter jackets, but he gets an E for effort. His car, clean and candy coated, is his time machine, but it takes a back seat to his narrative about street acceptance and freaky girls.
Even though this song sounds like one for the smokers, the subject never comes up. K.R.I.T.’s delivery at times whispers Pimp C and at other times he meanders into Scarface’s realm, but it’s all good. He’s young and developing, probably into something special.
Take a ride in Big K.R.I.T.’s “Tme Machine,” Returnof4Eva awaits you.
