Beat biting is always feast or famine. Either I have to spend most of my day hunting down a handful of songs or they come flying at my head like I’m in a game of sonic dodgeball. The last couple of days were definitely an example of the latter.
I’m not complaining though, at least not about that. There are plenty of other things to complain about like the dismantling of public employee rights in Wisconsin or the disenfranchisement efforts going on elsewhere. Then there is always that ridiculous radicalization hearing that occurred on Capitol Hill today. If none of this sounds familiar to you, then you are not #duh’ winning and I guess I’m wasting my breath (or keystrokes). Just remember one thing; voting at the local level has never been more important. Alrighty then, on with the show. First up is Avril Lavigne.
Goodbye Lullaby dropped on Tuesday and Avril has been making the necessary rounds to promote her 4thstudio album. Lavigne stopped by the BBC’s Live Lounge and belted out Kesha’s “Tik Tok” sans vocoder, so I guess you can say this version beats the original. You go Avril!

Next up is Pill with his spin on Keri Hilson’s “Pretty Girl Rock.” It’s an odd selection for the newly signed Maybach Music artist. Then to make things worse he takes the season’s lady empowerment anthem and turns it into something about selling drugs. Lovely.

Moving on we have Daron Jones. You remember him, from 112. He’s still grinding and he recently dropped a freestyle over Nicki Minaj’s “Roman’s Revenge.” I think I like the singing parts better (well, there’s only one), but if Chris Brown can rap why not Mr. Jones.

I was absolutely sure that if anyone, I mean anyone, laid down a freestyle over this “Racks on Racks” song it would have to be better than the original. Unfortunately for me (and you) I was wrong. This isn’t an indictment of this Psyde guy. I don’t know him as a person or an artist. I just don’t think this song can be helped. Plus that auto-tune turned up to code red is so harsh on the ears. Someone called Noia is on here too, but he doesn’t have much luck with this track either.

Mickey Factz snatched James Blake’s “The Wilhelm Scream,” spread some really gloomy lyrics on top and called it “Fallin”. Nightmares, bad bosses, money issues; it’s all so depressing. Mickey’s simmering anger is believable and he picked one hell of a foundation to talk out his problems.

Now we have David Cook, last year’s American Idol winner with a cover of Simple Minds’ “Don’t You Forget About Me.” This song is going to be used like the gong on the Gong Show I guess, ushering the loser off the stage. Cruel.

Moving on we have XV sharing some words he never said. The Lupe Fiasco track lumbers along but XV adds some life to the song. The lyrics are about exactly what you think they would be about and you get to learn a bit about the up and coming emcee.
XV – “Words I Never Said”

Last but not least is Crooked I manhandling Wiz Khalifa’s “Roll Up.” Crooked is yet another artist with a release allegedly scheduled for March 22nd. I have a feeling we won’t see everything we’re supposed to, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed. Anyway, enjoy the freestyle and see y’all next week.
