Hip-Hop and Travis Barker have a really tight relationship. Rappers flock to the drummer when some extra percussion is necessary and he manages to oblige on a regular basis. His drumming skills have been requested by artists from Lil Wayne to The Game to Soulja Boy. And to return the favor, he’s invited every rapper known to man to participate in his upcoming release, Give the Drummer Some.
He’s a great drummer and has been named on plenty of best drummer of all time lists, but you all are aware he’s not the only one who exists, right? Most bands have one and plenty of them are talented. Considering how busy Mr. Barker is with a rap homies, it might behoove upcoming artists to be aware of the talent pool because chances are when a drummer is needed, Barker will be booked. So Planet Ill is here to give you the who’s who in the world of drummers. Barker isn’t the only one handy with a set of sticks.
John Dolmayan – System of a Down
My hat goes off to any artist who can create such a signature sound that no one ever confuses them with anyone else and the construction of a System Of A Down song is nothing to play with. Any musician that can hang has to be good. Don’t try this at home folks.
System of a Down – “Chop Suey”
Buddy Miles – Band Of Gypsy’s
Okay, you can’t call Buddy Miles if you need a drummer because well… he’s deceased. When he was alive though, he was awesome;meandering from the drums, to the guitar to lead vocals like it was a breeze. I’m not sure if I preferred Buddy Miles the drummer to Buddy Miles to guitarist, but I do know hes one of the most talented artists of his generation and he might just be responsible for the drummer fro that ?uestLove rocks.
Band Of Gypsy’s – “Power To Love”
Tommy Lee – Motley Crue
No, Tommy Lee is not the best drummer in the world. He probably doesn’t even belong on this list. But he was the center of one of the biggest hair bands ever. He married the hottest chick on television. He made a home porno that outsold most professional releases and he could play upside down. All of that has to count for something.

Mos Def – Black Star
Mos Def on the drums doesn’t happen often, but crowds do get it from time to time. Its not earth shattering, but hes better than I am so i respect the man’s skill. Besides if you get Mos to drum for you, you end up with a rapper, a singer and an actor at your disposal. You could kill a whole bunch of birds with that stone.

Neil Peart – Rush
This dudes set up had like 163 drums on it. You needed directions just to find the seat. But he seemed to know where everything was and what all that shit was for. There are plenty of people who think Peart is the best drummer of all time. I don’t know about that, but it was always fun to watch him play.

Animal – The Muppets
Laugh if you want, Animal got down. Dr. Teeth would have been all bark and no bite if it wasn’t for the red and hairy one behind the kit.

Scott Travis – Judas Priest
I have to be honest with you. The above clip isn’t really animal playing, its Scott Travis from Judas Priest. Who knew The Muppets were so progressive? Anyway, Travis dreamed as a youngster he would one day play with Judas Priest and the opportunity presented itself in 1989. The rest is history. Rock on dude.

?uestlove – The Roots
The Roots are way too busy for you to call their commander and chief for anything. A million shows a year all over the globe, the nightly gig at the house of the peacock and recording consistently have to preclude this guy from your drummer emergency. But if you could get Mr. Love, I’m sure he would be worth the price and he has some really cool friends who might come with him.

Lars Ulrich – Metallica
Umm.. It’s Metallica bitches.
