Ski Beatz is on that grind. I don’t know what Curren$y signing will do to the overall talent level of the dojo over there at BluRoc, but they seem to be a magnet for the wunderkind presently, with Jay Elec, Mos Def, the aforementioned Spitta, Stalley all sharpening swords in the dungeon at various points in recent memory. Ski’s second act, including the mastering of new production elements, has played a large role in that creative energy. Next up? Locksmith, representing the Bay area by way of NY with his intro “Lock.”
Ski delivers a minimalist landscape comprised of drums and high hats with cow bells on the periphery and a recurring sample of the word “Lock” that appears as both back ground noise and occasionally fitting into the lyrics of Locksmith.
Locksmith, one half of Richmond California rap group The Frontline, litters this track with lines from the outset, drawing imagery of a beast with blood pouring from his teeth to represent how wild he is on the mic. His Master’s level education from the University of California powers several other gems that are not so readily apparent like mentioning Beatrix Kiddo (the bride from Kill Bill) and managing hard-to-spit, tongue twisting lines like “the shit you spit is sick that’s why you serve it like the flu.”
Locksmith also employs different rhyme schemes, dropping into a Big Pun like rapid fire pace in the second verse. The last verse is littered with broken verbs like vertebrae and lines that do damage. I’ll let you dig those.
Ski Beatz as sensei has created another sharp-bladed assassin with a distinct persona that borrows from things we’ve seen before, but manages to remain individual. The Locksmith looks like he’s going to be something serious. Looking forward to see what he’s about.
