Sleepy subdivisions all over California must be relaxing their noise ordinances because there seems to be a garage band for every acre in that state. Not that I’m complaining, the West side is doing big things in a handful of genres right now and adding to the sonic bliss of it all is Dum Dum Girls.
Sweet vocals over heavy distortion is getting pretty popular these days, but that trend is the foundation of the group’s sound. Lady-like, but not too much. Pop-ish but not lame or dainty, they bring just enough ruckus to not be written off as just pretty faces.
Dum Dum Girls will be dropping an EP, He Gets Me High, on their fans on March 1, but the title cut came out to play early.
It’s immediately loud and crispy, reminiscent of idling chainsaws or how noisy the chip bag sounds when you’re trying to open it on the low. It’s not crystal clear, but the lack of HD gives it a nostalgic feel. The flow of the song whispers 60’s cool. I see color blocking and white boots when I close my eyes, but that might just be me.
Dee Dee, the head lyricist in charge seems to enjoy writing about the hubby and this song may be part of that collection. The words sound like man addiction, purposeful submission and the glee that bubbles up when he doesn’t take advantage of that. All she wants to be is his destiny. Its pop-punk love with a dash of old school rock. Nice.
On March 1 Dum Dum girls get high. Join them. All the cool kids are doing it.
