The Planet, along with Chicago’s own Square-One of B-Side Radio, have joined forces to bring you the week in review in Hip-Hop and current events, along with the occasional special guest and some music to keep you moving through your day.
This week’s IllSide Radio takes a real look at Kool Herc’s medical situation. Is it appropriate for people to solicit donations for Kool Herc’s medical bills? How do people know what sources are legitimate if in fact they are moved to contribute to the cause? What, if anything is “owed” to Kool Herc for his contribution to Hip-Hop.
We delve even further and ponder why we haven’t seen more activity from Kool Herc. Shouldn’t the universally acknowledged Father of Hip-Hop have a book or memoirs released to give us a real look at the beginnings of this movement? Why hasn’t he done a DJ tour? We ask all these questions and more.
In a recent interview with HiphopDX, the D.O.C. announced his departure from Dr. Dre’s camp. Is this a good thing for the D.O.C.? Was if fair for Dr. Dre not to look out for him as he gained prominence? We look at the story and for possible reasons for the breakup.
The discussion turns towards groups and why they breakup. Is it always about ego? What things go on in the background with artists? Are all artists created equal in groups? We look at NWA and Wutang, EPMD and other infamous break-ups (Tribe, G- Unit, etc.). If a group breaks up, is it a loyalty issue? What happens when one rapper is putting in more work than the other members or has more talent?
Sit Back, Relax, and take a ride on the Ill Side.
