The first thing you hear on this New Big K.R.I.T. record, (if you have good headphones or a good system) is the crackle of wax you used to hear when DJ’s used to spin actually records. Before the Serato reign and before laptops were more important than coffins. It ain’t a back in the day hater thing, but that same backwards glance is all over his latest leak, “Dreamin.”
There is a lonely echoed clap similar to ‘Kast in the classic “Elevators.” A very simple drum and a soul/pop sample vocal sample push the emotion of the song. The production features throwback elements to that era including tambourines and a somber guitar.
K.R.I.T. pays homage to his departed grandmother and remembers the naysayers to his journey in Hip-Hop. He looks back on those days fondly, enriched by the path he’s traveled and his accomplishments so far in music. There is a nod to Three-6 Mafia, UGK and Scarface. There is a bit of disillusionment in the hook, especially when he mentions how people felt his story wasn’t compelling and attempts to change his identity as an artist. He ends with an uplifting message to those who’ve seen him rise: don’t be stopped by those who don’t believe in you.
The song is not out of this world but just another file in the case of K.R.I.T.’s range and legitimacy as an artist. Regardless of what forces were arrayed against him, he never stopped “Dreamin.” You shouldn’t either. Enjoy.
