We been wondering what’s going on with 50 Cent. Is he going to stick to acting? After a lackluster album is he going to come back with a new formula or is he going to return to the 50 Cent that people loved, whose hardcore rhymes were balanced by a sense of humor, a penchant for strong hooks, charisma and melody? We’ve had a few singles in the last few months, some sounding like he’s on his way back, others sounding like he’s on his way out. Mr. Jackson drops more of the former with his latest with “Old 20003 Ferrari.”
He rhymes over a late 90’s early millennium concoction that echoes that Havoc/RZA slow bubbling soul. There is a high speed soul sample and a deep bassline burrowing beneath ambient noise and accents. The track opens with a lit match and a puff of weed smoke and 50 exclaiming “This sound like some old Wu shit!” while interpolating a line from Meth/Biggie duet “The What.”
He’s about that cheddar and watching cats go Romancing The Stone with his old bitch while he plots and plans his next move. He notes the way chicks can get you caught up, making a reference to frenemy Nas’s Kelis situation, wile throwing a subtle jab at Amber Rose and the girls like her that run the industry circuit. He transitions from third person narrative to first person device, letting you know that if you line up on the wrong side you may get erased. Again he doesn’t fail to mention his headphone line at the end, to the point where you wonder if the music is just the means to push product, but the song is dope. You can stand product placement.
“Old 2003 Ferrari” is that 50 you miss when you listening to him rhyme over a played out Dre beat or some track from the hot producer of the moment. The kid from Southside that sifted through beat tapes until he heard magic and went in the booth to have fun and menace. If he can recapture this essence for a full album, he could get back in the game in a hurry. Polish up that old Ferrari. Vroom.
